Halfshaft Disassembly- 510/240z-280z style

---- Half-Shaft dis-assembly ---- (hopefully better pictures to updated)

This is meant to give you a pre-view/idea on how these units are assembled/dis-assembled if you are not sure.

I decided to dis-assemble my spare 240z/s30 halfshafts to determine if they are indeed good candidates for rebuild/parts/or... !?

Couple of run-of-the-mill snap-ring pliers , side-cutters , pliers , and a flat-bladed screw-driver pictured below(somewhere lol).
Is all it really takes to get started that is... assuming the u-joints have been pressed out already.

Sorry for the grainy/blurry pictures in advance. My hands were greasy therefore the phone ended up being a bit that way :-/

Pulled back the boot on one of them and dis-covered a tiny tear which I made bigger before the picture... ( was fairly firm on the boot.... it goes through stressed/stretched ou abuse so why shouldn't I mimic this ya know ? lol )

Clipped off the stainless steel boot bands with side-cutters. (was later at night so I didn't want to make any noise...)

On to the second band closest to the differential (inner).

Peeled back the inner boot in order to reach the inner c-clip.

A better angle of that inner c-clip I mentioned above ^^^ ( wiped off majority of grease for it to be seen [:)] )

I decided to use slighty "heavier" duty 90-degree angled snap-ring pliers.

Behind the snap-ring just taken out ^^^ there is a shim. Took it out and slid it down the shaft.

Shim and Snap-ring together. Just left them on there as they have no-where else to go [:)]

Flipped over the half-shaft and am now looking at the "butt" end of it (end that faces in towards the differential 3rd member).

There is a snap-ring to take out here as well.

90-degree snap ring pliers are used here again.

I then decided to push/lightly knock down the halfshat in the correct spot... to "nudge" the aluminum plug with an o-ring attached to the outer rim area out of the half-shaft.

Pulled off that cap to re-veal this wonderful goodness [:D]

This is a retaining spacer/washer for the (4) rows of balls/spacers in each joint.

Notice the (4) tabs ?

Pulled the "male" end of the shaft out of the "female" housing.

See that (4) point retainer we were talking about earlier ? Held in by you guessed it...

3-balls + 3-spacers = per half-shaft assembly (at least these two assembly's ... lol)

Area closest to the top of the picture = differential end of male half-shaft plunger.

Was time to pull it apart.

WARNING: --- Do not do this in an area where if you drop a ball it will never be found again = yard , dirt , gravel , etc [:)]

I dropped 1 ball thinking I would be able to "catch" them all ... boy was I wrong ... luckly I setup a "catch box" for this very purpose [:cool:]

You'll see the balls rotating/wearing into the spacers... wouldn't worry about it too much.

Just been working on other projects and cleaning these as I go where I can.

Should be done soon... *knock on wood* ... and hopefully will update this thread with more pics (to those that wish to know)
